Artist development is the process of nurturing and guiding artist's careers, helping them grow creatively and professionally. ONLINE PRESENCE.
Pop music has always been an ever-evolving genre, adapting to changing tastes and influences. The development of pop artists has gone hand in hand with advancements in technology and media, allowing for greater exposure and opportunities for success. The Internet and social media, in particular, have revolutionised the way pop artists are discovered, promoted, and engage with fans. ARTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS. In the early stages of a signed pop artist's career, development is crucial. Artist development programs offered by record labels provide the necessary resources and guidance to help artists refine their sound and build a following. This can include recording sessions, songwriting workshops, and music video production. Pop artists who receive this type of support have a better chance of making a successful debut, as they have already honed their skills and created a strong online presence. IMAGE CREATION & MANAGEMENT One aspect of artist development that has become increasingly important in recent years is personal branding. Pop artists must have a clear image and message that resonates with their target audience. Social media platforms provide an opportunity for artists to connect with fans, share their music, and promote their brand. Building a strong online presence requires consistent posting, engagement with fans, and a willingness to showcase personal moments and behind-the-scenes glimpses of their creative process. In addition to artist development programs, record labels also provide ongoing support for established pop artists. This can include marketing and promotion, tour support, and financial management. Labels may also provide access to industry experts who can offer guidance on everything from music production to negotiating contracts. GOING INDEPENDENT Despite the many benefits of record label support, some pop artists choose to pursue a more independent route. This often involves self-funding recordings, promoting music through social media, and booking gigs without the assistance of a label. While this route may be more challenging, it provides greater artistic control and the opportunity to build a loyal fanbase. AN ONGOING PROCESS The development and support of pop artists is an ongoing process that involves a combination of factors. From artist development programs to social media, the right combination of resources and guidance can help an artist to achieve success in the music industry. Whether working with a label or pursuing an independent route, pop artists must be dedicated and willing to invest the time and effort required to build a successful career. MUSICIANS AND A.I.
Musicians have always been at the forefront of innovation, using technology to create new sounds and push the boundaries of what's possible. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool for musicians, allowing them to explore new creative possibilities and find new ways to connect with their audiences. While some may view AI as a threat to the traditional role of the musician, many musicians are embracing this technology and finding new ways to collaborate with it. CREATING NEW INSTRUMENTS. One of the most exciting ways that musicians are using AI is through the creation of new instruments and tools. For example, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a robotic drumming prosthesis that allows amputee drummers to play with a new level of precision and speed. The system uses AI to interpret the drummer's movements and adjust the rhythm accordingly, creating a seamless and intuitive musical experience. Similarly, the company MXX has developed an AI-powered digital instrument that allows musicians to create complex, layered sounds with a single touch. NEW SOUNDS. NEW TEXTURES. Another area where musicians are using AI is in the creation of new sounds and textures. By feeding massive amounts of audio data into machine learning algorithms, researchers are able to teach AI systems to identify patterns and generate new sounds based on those patterns. This has led to the development of new tools like Google's NSynth, which uses a neural network to blend together the qualities of different sounds and create entirely new ones. Musicians can use these tools to explore new sonic landscapes and find unique ways to express themselves. COLLABORATION. But AI isn't just a tool for creating new sounds and instruments - it's also a powerful tool for collaboration. Many musicians are now using AI to collaborate with each other, or even with their fans. For example, the musician Taryn Southern used AI to co-write the lyrics and melody for her song "Break Free." She fed the AI system a list of words and phrases that she wanted to include in the song, and the system generated a melody based on those inputs. Southern then worked with a human producer to fine-tune the lyrics and production, resulting in a finished product that blended human creativity with AI-generated ideas. INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES. Other musicians are using AI to create interactive experiences for their audiences. For example, the musician Björk has partnered with Microsoft to create an immersive, AI-powered installation called "Kórsafn." The installation uses AI to analyze the visitor's movements and create a unique audiovisual experience based on those movements. Similarly, the composer Emily Howell has created a system that uses AI to generate music in real time based on the listener's emotional responses. This creates a truly interactive musical experience that can adapt and evolve based on the listener's mood and preferences. PUSHING BOUNDARIES. While there are certainly challenges and limitations to using AI in music, many musicians see it as a powerful tool for exploring new creative possibilities and connecting with their audiences in new ways. By collaborating with AI systems, musicians can push the boundaries of what's possible and create truly unique and innovative musical experiences. And as AI technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in this field in the years to come. EXPERIMENTATION. One of the most exciting aspects of AI in music is the potential for new forms of collaboration and experimentation. As AI systems become more sophisticated and powerful, musicians are able to explore new creative possibilities and find new ways to connect with their audiences. For example, the musician and composer Akihiko Matsumoto has created a series of AI-powered musical performances that blend traditional Japanese music with modern technology. Using a system called "Tivitas," Matsumoto is able to create complex, layered performances that combine live musicians with AI-generated sounds and visuals. Similarly, the musician and engineer Peter Kirn has created an AI-powered instrument called "MIRAI." The instrument uses machine learning algorithms to analyze the musician. TAKE A CHALLENGE

Jazz piano technique is distinct from classical piano technique in many ways. While both forms of piano playing require a high level of skill and dexterity, the differences in their techniques lie in their respective approaches to rhythm, harmony, and improvisation.
1. RHYTHM. One of the most significant differences between jazz and classical piano technique is the emphasis on rhythm. In classical music, the emphasis is placed on playing with a steady and even tempo, whereas in jazz, rhythm is much more fluid and dynamic. Jazz pianists often use syncopated rhythms, polyrhythms, and swing to create a more expressive and engaging sound. This requires a strong sense of timing and a keen ability to anticipate and react to the other musicians in the ensemble. 2. HARMONY. Another important difference is the approach to harmony. In classical music, the harmonic structure is usually predetermined, and the pianist's role is to execute the composer's intentions with precision. In jazz, the harmonic structure is often more flexible and open-ended, allowing for improvisation and experimentation. Jazz pianists must have a deep understanding of chord progressions, voicings, and substitutions, as well as the ability to create their own harmonies on the fly. 3. IMPROVISATION. Improvisation is a key component of jazz piano technique, and it requires a different set of skills than classical piano playing. In jazz, improvisation involves creating melodies and solos on the spot, based on the chords and rhythms being played by the rest of the band. This requires a strong sense of creativity, spontaneity, and musical intuition. Jazz pianists must be able to think on their feet and respond to the other musicians in real-time. 4. TECHNIQUE. The physical techniques used in jazz piano playing are also different from those used in classical piano playing. Jazz pianists often use a lighter touch, with a focus on articulating the rhythms and creating a sense of swing. They may also use different hand positions and techniques, such as the "thumb under" technique, which allows for faster and more fluid playing. In general, jazz piano technique is distinct from classical piano technique in many ways. While both require a high level of skill and precision, jazz piano playing emphasises rhythm, harmony, improvisation, and a more fluid physical technique. Jazz pianists must have a deep understanding of the music's structure and be able to adapt and respond to the other musicians in the ensemble. Mastery of jazz piano technique requires years of practice, experimentation, and dedication. Learning to play the piano quickly involves setting clear goals and consistent practice. Here are some steps you can take to speed up the learning process:
Exercising There are many exercises that can help pianists to improve their skills. Some of the most important exercises include:
Overall, a well-rounded practice routine should include a mix of these different types of exercises in order to help pianists achieve piano perfection.

When young pianists decide to pursue professional careers. It usually means going for a music performance degree in a conservatory or university. They also have to choose whether to focus on classical or non-classical music. In most music colleges this means choosing between classical and jazz degrees. Classical majors continue with predominantly classical music in their lives, and jazz majors do all other piano styles. Differences in Practising: Scale/chord relations as well as style knowledge, are learned early when learning jazz piano, and emphasised throughout. Improvisation is an integral part of Jazz studies and is encouraged and expected in most performances and syllabuses. Scale knowledge and it’s application is very important in Jazz, and commands a high priority. The Classical school favours Piano Technique and Reading skills, and the theory is slightly different to the jazz syllabus. Having said that, it would be wrong not to include classical techniques like arpeggios, broken chords and Hanon excercises in your practicing routine, as these techniques are fundamental in creating a proper piano technique and will act as gateways to Jazz techniques. Classical piano technique enhances the Jazz Method and will lift your playing to new heights. How Do You Get There?Separating Harmony and Melody.
When beginning to improvise on the Piano, it’s a good idea to keep the effort very organised and separate chords and melody. Play chords, or bass notes, with the left hand, and melody, or scales with the right - as opposed to playing 2 handed voicings or left hand arpeggios. I would recommend playing "Shell Chords" and Intervals in the left hand, as opposed to playing full chords. - It's harder but sound cleaner. Don't forget to maintain scale practice for left hand. When I recommend allocating each hand to a specific role, I mean that as a starting point to let you begin building your musical language. To compensate for lack of finger movement in the left hand, I would definitely recommend additional scale drilling. It's all about a balanced diet! |
